Volkswagen Golf, Golf R and GTI Clubsport Hit the Road

Added: 14 January 2021

If you’ve been waiting for the new Volkswagen Golf performance models, wait no more. They’ve officially rolled out in the UK.

The Golf R and GTI Clubsport have “hit the road” with everything Volkswagen owners know and love about these performance models - with slight twists, upgrades, and variations. Volkswagen has put a lot of focus into these models.

So, what can you expect from them?

The New Volkswagen Golf R

The Golf R will sit on top of the traditional Golf range with 316bhp, 4WD, and 2.0 litre turbo petrol. The standard model features a full “R” body kit that fans have come to know and love, an R steering wheel, and quad exhaust pipes. The unique “R” button on the steering wheel will provide drivers with access to flappy paddles and sports seats, as well as chrome door mirrors. You’ll feel like a sporty spy simply by pushing a button.

If you want to opt for the Performance Pack, you’ll be tacking on about £2000 to the £39,270 price tag. But, the upgrade features 19” Estoril alloys, drift and special drive models, a rear spoiler, and offers a more obvious “sporty” setup.

The New Volkswagen GTI Clubsport

The GTI Clubsport is, essentially a replacement model for the GTI TCR, and possibly with better value. With the Clubsport, drivers will get more power, a new driving mode (including ‘Special’, which was specifically set up for the Nburburg in Germany, where the car was manufactured. You may never get to use this mode unless you find yourself there, but it goes to show you just how powerful and quick this car can be), a two-part rear spoiler, and Digital Cockpit Pro. You will also enjoy larger brakes and a vehicle dynamic manager to put you in complete control. If you’re already a GTI fan, this model with lowered suspension could be your next upgrade at just £37,215.

What you’ll really notice about the Clubsport is its lightweight aggressiveness. That might seem contradictory, but Volkswagen has managed to pull off a model that significant work on the chassis. The GTI Clubsport goes from 0-62mph in just 5.6 seconds, which sets it at the top for being the fastest Golf GTI in existence.

It’s not just fast and powerful. It’s sleek and stylish no matter how you drive it. You’ll be able to make sharper turns thanks to its steering and suspension tuning, and a lightweight body with improved aerodynamics. Like the Golf R, you’ll enjoy a high-tech, state-of-the-art interior with a digital cockpit at your fingertips. That cockpit includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and touchscreen navigation.

For Volkswagen Golf fans, both of these new releases are worth checking out. While they might feature hefty price tags, the changes and advancements that have been made to both models are well worth it, and can provide you with a smooth, sleek, sporty, and powerful experience whether you’re driving in the city or taking your car on your next adventure.
